Artist's Comments

A just completed product. I spent a lot of time on this one, trying to work on my illumination more. I think I will use shell gold on my next piece slated to begin, well, this week. The piece is about 11x8. A steady hand was hard to do on the detailing of the flourishing, but I managed. Working with face to paper with a sable and a spotter brush is back-breaking labor.
The poem, itself, is also of my making. Used regular acrylic paint, a Pelikan calligraphy pen, a fine-tipped pen on bristol paper.
The script is a variation on medieval Batarde' hand (my favorite syle of writing). Enjoy.

Beautiful piece, and I really like the way you've written "Your smile".
As for the rest of the calligraphy, that's quite well done, but I think you've exagerated a little with the end of the letters (I mean the little lines at the end of each letter are far too long, but that's personal). And you should have erased your lines before scanning ;)
Anyway, these are mere details, the whole thing is impressive.

i guess it's all a matter of taste. i meant to exagerate the hairline strokes. i erased as much as i could of the lines, but to avoid smearing any of the ink, which did happen. i had to use the trusty Xacto to scratch it away. i don't know if it was attributed to the paper, or i just didn't wait longt enough for the ink to completely dry into the paper. so, out of fear, i avoided erasing some of the lines. Besides, presence of the ruled lines are quite apparent in medieval MS. i guess i just figured it added to the antiquarian look of it. :giggle:

What is the trusty Xacto?

I think you've not waited enough before erasing, I'm often impatient and know that problem.
The best is to wait for a whole night before erasing lines once the calligraphy is finished.
Or maybe it's due to the quality of your pencil, if it's to strong, it makes deep marks on the paper.
You're right as for the apparent lines in medevial manuscripts... it's just that I don't like them ;)

Beautiful piece anyhow.

 The Xacto, as in Xacto knife. Like the kind you use in model making. I usually always have one handy in case I goof up. I recently got a light table, and I came up with the concept that I am going to use an underlying sheet of paper with ruled lines to use as a guide. It's a strong light, and shines easily through several sheets of paper at once. Also, I have been using it to center justify my lines - like I will write out the lines first on a spare piece of paper, then I will use the light table to line it up where I want it on the paper that I am doing the finished piece on. I'll just lightly mark where the first letter of the line will start. Then, after I write out the line, it's perfectly centered.
So what I have now done if use the computer to print out a series of ruled lines that correspond to the height of the intended lettering and use that as a guide. :)
No more pencil marks to erase! YAY!

I've heard about that light table :)
Yuou're quite lucky to have one, I can't really afford it.
I'm eager to see your next calligraphy without lines now ;)
:iconxkommunik8:
i use a portable light table by Artograph. It didn't cost much at all! I think I paid about $20 for it on sale. It's pretty big, too. Big enough for any moderate sized document. A life-sized one, however - yeah, that would be very expensive and i would have nowhere to put it. heh
